Being a parent is hard, discouraging work sometimes. I know, the understatement of the century, right? 🙂
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE being a mom. I love getting to raise my daughter up to love the Lord, to love learning, to love others, and on and on and on but some days I find myself on the last nerve of frustration when she is “pushing” all of mommies buttons just right. Or I am just overwhelmed thinking about how much I need to instill into her before she has to go out and face the big scary world without me beside her. Or I get discouraged wondering if anything I do really matters that much yet. I mean, she is barely 14 months. Does it matter too much now if she throws a temper tantrum about not getting her way? Do I have to work so hard to “win” these poor attitude battles already?!
So what does a mom do when these little voices start to creep in? Well, I can make a choice. I can give into the lies that Satan is feeding me. Or I can turn to God and seek out His truth. Just the other day, when I was having one of those weak mommy days, God lead me to a blog post from an older mom who has been there and done that. She just simply highlighted some verses that she had put to memory as a mom to help her through the tough days of parenting. And those verses were exactly what this mom needed to stay the course and fight off discouragement for another day.
It made me so aware of how much I need to be pouring God’s truth into my own life during this season of parenting a small child. Feelings will be all over the place (especially for pregnant moms like myself!) but there is a solid grounding that I can find in God and His Words of truth. I must dedicate myself to Jesus everyday and let His grace and love show through me to my daughter and my husband and everyone else I come across. He will show me what to teach Laura each day. He will give me grace to approach situations with patience when I have none left in my own willpower.
So let me leave you with this verse that helps me over and over again as I parent and I pray it will help you as well!
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
